About

About Dolphin Japanese
Why Dolphin Japanese?
We want Japanese to feel connected, discoverable, and usable.

Dolphin Japanese is a growing project for Japanese learners around the world. It begins with a simple belief: language becomes easier to understand when learners can see how its parts connect.

The Idea
Language is not a collection of isolated pieces.

A kanji appears in words. Words connect to meanings. Meanings connect to other ideas, situations, and expressions.

Yet language learning is often presented one item at a time: one character, one word, one definition, one exercise.

Dolphin Japanese explores a different possibility.

What if learners could discover Japanese by following the connections that already exist inside the language?

What We Value
Three ideas guide the project.
01
See connections

Japanese becomes more meaningful when relationships between kanji, words, meanings, and ideas become visible.

02
Follow curiosity

Learning does not always have to follow one fixed path. Curiosity can become a powerful way to discover the language.

03
Build understanding

Memorization has its place, but understanding how Japanese works can make learning deeper, clearer, and easier to use.

The First Project
Kanji Map is where Dolphin Japanese begins.

Kanji Map turns kanji and vocabulary into something you can explore.

Instead of moving through a fixed list, learners can start with one kanji or word and follow the connections that appear.

Category Maps add another way to explore by theme, level, situation, or topic.

Kanji Map is not intended to replace dictionaries, textbooks, teachers, or other learning tools. It offers another way to see Japanese.

Behind the Project
Dolphin Japanese and Five Star Dolphins

Dolphin Japanese is created and operated by Five Star Dolphins in Tokyo, Japan.

Five Star Dolphins has worked in language education for years, and Dolphin Japanese grows from that experience.

This project applies that experience to Japanese learning, with a particular focus on understanding, connection, discovery, and practical use.

Looking Ahead
Dolphin Japanese is designed to grow.

Kanji Map is the first learning experience under Dolphin Japanese, but it is not intended to be the last.

Over time, this site can become a broader home for Japanese learning tools, resources, explanations, and new ways of exploring the language.

We are starting small on purpose.
Rather than launching many unfinished ideas at once, Dolphin Japanese will grow step by step as each part becomes ready.
The best way to understand the idea is to explore it.

Start with one kanji, follow a connection, and see where your curiosity takes you.
